~LEARNING TOGETHER: LEARNING TO BE TOGETHER~

At Pye Bank, our music curriculum seeks to inspire, develop and nurture passion and understanding for a wide range of music, while equipping our children with the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to compose, play and appreciate it. By the end of primary school our children will: have the confidence to create their own compositions and perform them for others; to speak with increasing clarity and precision about their feelings, opinions and technical knowledge of different music; and have experience playing a variety of tuned and untuned instruments with increasing confidence.

From Foundation stage to Year 6, children encounter music from a wide range of traditions, including Western classical, modern popular and music from other countries and cultures. In listening lessons, children are taught to speak thoughtfully, respectfully and with increasing precision about the music they encounter. Throughout each year, children are given the opportunity to compose, sing and play in a range of different styles, and build their knowledge of musical vocabulary. Children are shown a range of ways to record and transcribe music, including graphical scores and standard notation.

We believe that performing for others is a crucial aspect of musical education, and this is at the heart of our curriculum. Children in all year groups are given the opportunity to perform their own music for an audience in assemblies and concerts.

At Pye Bank, children are given the opportunity to learn instruments.  Our school choir runs after school and has regular performances throughout the year both in school and outside of school. The school also works in partnership with Sheffield City Cathedral to provide extra weekly music and singing sessions for selected pupils. These pupils have had the opportunity to perform in school and at the Cathedral.

We aspire for our music curriculum to develop a life-long love of music and performing in our children and an appreciation of music’s power to inspire us, move us and unite us.
